About

The club was formed in 2003 with a small group of individuals led by Gordon Clay from the Rocky Point Sailing Association.  Through a long standing relationship with School District 43, Rocky Point Sailing provides educational programs for the schools in the late spring, including sailing and canoeing programs.  In 2003, Rocky Point Sailing acquired 16 canoes from the school district, under an agreement to use the canoes in the school training programs.   Gordon saw an opportunity, as the canoes were only used for a few weeks a year, to form an offshoot canoe club which would allow other members of the community to use the canoes - in exchange for maintaining the canoes and keeping them available for the school programs, the club gets free use of the canoes !

With the explosion of ocean kayaking, the club was also opened up to persons who own their own kayaks to also become members - the club does not own any kayaks, however kayak lessons and rentals are available onsite at rocky point through Rocky Point Kayak

Very quickly through 2004/05 membership began growing.  As of May 2006, the club has 25 registered members, including about 5 kayakers.

The club is very affordable, and as the canoes are stored on site at rocky point park, is very convenient for the members.

All new members must be achieve flat water canoe certification through a training program offered by the club at a cost of $ 100 (normally this would cost around $ 200 or more), and one of the clubs goals is to promote safe boating, as well as environmentally friendly recreation.

The club endeavours to be as much of a social club as a 'sport' club, and holds regular social events such as barbecues in conjunction with Rocky Point Sailing Association at the Old Mill Boathouse.
